Project Lifecycle 5: Circuit Migration and Virtualization

 

Objective: Migrate existing circuits to more cost-effective and reliable providers and implement virtualization infrastructure to improve resource utilization, scalability, and cost efficiency. The project aimed to modernize Rocstar Wireless’s IT infrastructure, reduce operational costs, and enhance system resilience.

Timeline: January 2022 – June 2022

The project will be divided into five distinct phases: Initiation, Planning, Execution, Monitoring & Controlling, and Closure.

Phases: Initiation (January 2022)

  • Project Goals Definition: Established clear objectives for the project, including reducing circuit costs, improving network reliability, and implementing virtualization to optimize resource allocation and scalability.
  • Feasibility Studies: Conducted feasibility studies to assess the current infrastructure, including an analysis of existing circuits, network dependencies, and hardware capabilities. Identified potential risks, such as downtime during migration and compatibility issues with virtualization platforms.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Engaged IT teams, network engineers, and business stakeholders to understand requirements, align on goals, and secure buy-in for the project.
  • Vendor Evaluation: Evaluated potential circuit providers and virtualization platforms, considering factors such as cost, reliability, scalability, and compatibility with existing systems.

Planning (February 2022)

  • Migration Strategy Development: Developed a comprehensive migration strategy outlining the steps to transition circuits to new providers while minimizing service disruptions. Defined clear milestones and deliverables for each phase of the migration.
  • Virtualization Roadmap: Created a roadmap for implementing virtualization infrastructure, including hardware requirements, software procurement, and resource allocation.
  • Procurement of Virtualization Software: Procured industry-leading virtualization platforms such as VMware and Hyper-V to support the project’s goals. Ensured the software met scalability, performance, and security requirements.
  • Risk Mitigation Plan: Designed a risk mitigation plan to address potential challenges such as data loss, downtime, and compatibility issues during the migration and virtualization process.
  • Training Preparation: Prepared training materials and schedules to equip IT staff with the skills needed to manage and maintain the new virtualized systems.

Execution (March 2022 – May 2022):

  • Circuit Migration: Migrated circuits to new, cost-effective providers, ensuring minimal downtime and uninterrupted service during the transition. Conducted testing to validate connectivity, performance, and reliability after migration.
  • Virtualization Platform Installation: Installed and configured virtualization platforms, including VMware and Hyper-V, to consolidate hardware resources and improve scalability.
  • Resource Optimization: Virtualized servers, storage, and networking components to optimize resource utilization, reduce hardware dependency, and improve system efficiency.
  • Testing and Validation: Conducted rigorous testing of the virtualized environment to ensure system stability, performance, and compatibility with existing applications and workloads.
  • Incremental Rollout: Implemented virtualization in phases to ensure a smooth transition, starting with non-critical systems before expanding to mission-critical workloads.

Monitoring & Controlling (Throughout Execution Phase):

  • Performance Monitoring: Continuously monitored system performance during and after the migration to identify and resolve any issues. Used performance metrics and analytics tools to track resource utilization, network reliability, and system stability.
  • Issue Resolution: Addressed migration-related issues, such as connectivity disruptions, configuration errors, and hardware incompatibilities, in real-time to minimize impact on operations.
